Mitsubishi Motors Corporation

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is Japan's fourth largest car company. They manufacture passenger cars as well as light commercial trucks domestically, in North America and in other Asian countries. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was formed as a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in 1970 but their history goes back much further than that. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd began manufacturing automobiles as early as 1917. Mitsubishi Internal Combustion Engine Co. Ltd was manufacturing engines for airplanes in 1920. After WWII Japanese conglomerates were broken up and the corporate name Mitsubishi was banned for several years. The company separated into East Japan Heavy Industries, Central Japan Heavy Industries and West Japan Heavy Industries. Eventually the name Mitsubishi reappeared and by 1967 the motor vehicle division was producing about 75,000 cars a year. The success of that division led to the spinoff and creation of an independent company in 1970, named Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.

Mitsubishi and Chrysler

Chrysler bought into Mitsubishi in 1971 and became owner of 15% of the company's stock. By this time the company was producing 260,000 cars a year and Chrysler quickly began to market Mitsubishi -built cars in the U.S. Chrysler sold two sub-compact Mitsubishi built models know as the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Arrow. Mitsubishi introduced a sub-compact in 1976 know as the Galant. Mitsubishi's annual production passed the one million mark in 1980 and by 1981 began competing neck and neck with Mazda behind industry leaders Toyota and Nissan.

Challenges and Future

Mitsubishi faced some strong challenges in the 1990's and into the 2000's. Declining sales, along with 2 notable lawsuits stemming from sexual harassment suits at an Illinois plant had a large affect on the company. The southeast Asia economic crisis spelled big trouble for Mitsubishi in 1997 and in September of that year they closed their Thai factory. Japan sales also slowed and since Mitsubishi did not have as strong a hold on the US market as Toyota and Honda, the impact of the turmoil in the Asian economies had a greater affect on Mitsubishi. In 2000 Mitsubishi entered in a partnership with DaimlerChrysler creating the world's third largest vehicle maker. They had hoped this would reverse their fortune but on the eve of the transaction a routine probe by the Japanese Transport Ministry found an employee's locker full of piles of customer complaints that had not been reported to the government. Mitsubishi asserted its innocence but did recall about 620,000 cars and trucks for several of the reasons identified in the complaints. A Tokyo court gave Mitsubishi a heavy fine and although the DaimlerChrysler deal still went through, sale slumped when the news became public. Mitsubishi continued to struggle with challenges. Sales in North America remained sluggish into 2003 and company continued to struggle with costs and debt.
